When Do AI Glasses Developer Platforms Actually Open? A 2026 Timeline

Every major AI glasses maker now says developers matter. What they don't say as loudly is that "we have an SDK" and "you can ship an app to real users" are two different milestones, and most of the industry is still stuck between them. If you're deciding which platform to build for first, the honest answer depends less on hardware specs and more on which company has actually opened the door — and how far.

Here's where the four platforms that matter stand as of August 2026.

Meta: preview is open, publishing is not

Meta shipped the Wearables Device Access Toolkit as a public developer preview on December 4, 2025. That preview is real and usable today — developers can pull camera and audio data from Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta hardware, build against it, create an organization, and push builds to testers inside that organization.

What you still can't do, as of this writing, is publish to the general public. Meta has kept that gated to a small set of select partners, with broad general availability for publishing "targeted for later in 2026" — a date that has not landed yet. If you're building something you want strangers to install, Meta's timeline is: prototype now, ship later this year at the earliest.

Google + Samsung: the SDK is ahead of the hardware

Android XR is the inverse situation. Google has been iterating in public faster than anyone else — Developer Preview 3 (December 2025) was the first release with real glasses-specific tooling: Jetpack Projected for sensor/speaker/display access, Compose Glimmer for building UI on a limited field of view, and an emulator that simulates glasses hardware without needing a physical unit. Developer Preview 4 followed in May 2026, and the core libraries (XR Runtime, Jetpack SceneCore, ARCore for Jetpack XR) are described as moving to Beta soon.

The catch is the hardware isn't fully here yet either. Samsung confirmed its first Galaxy Glasses — an audio-only SKU, co-designed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster — for summer 2026, with a display-equipped follow-on rumored for 2027. So the SDK is comparatively mature, but you're building for a device category that's still rolling out in pieces.

Snap: already open, if you're willing to pay for the kit

This is the one people underrate. Snap OS 2.0 shipped in September 2025 directly to Spectacles 5 developer kits, and it's the same OS that powers the consumer "Specs" launching this fall. Anyone can join the Spectacles Developer Program, buy a dev kit, and start building in Lens Studio with a Mobile Kit for BLE companion apps and a UI Kit built on Snap OS 2.0's design system today — not "in preview," not "for select partners."

The tradeoff is cost and reach: developer hardware isn't cheap, and Spectacles' installed base is a fraction of Ray-Ban Meta's. But if what you want is a real SDK you can ship against right now, Snap is currently the most open platform of the four, full stop.

Apple: there is no platform yet

Apple hasn't announced smart glasses. The current reporting — consistent across multiple supply-chain sources — points to a WWDC 2027 unveil and a late-2027 consumer launch, after at least one prior delay driven by engineering rework and, reportedly, uncertainty about how to message the privacy story around always-on cameras. There is no preview SDK, no developer kit, and no public timeline shorter than "next year at the earliest."

If your roadmap has an Apple glasses app on it, the realistic planning assumption is: nothing to build against before mid-2027.

So which platform should you actually build for

Ranked by how open the door is today, not by hype: Snap (real SDK, real dev kit, shipping now) is ahead of Android XR (mature SDK, hardware still rolling out) which is ahead of Meta (usable preview, publishing still gated) which is ahead of Apple (nothing yet). If you want the largest existing user base, Meta is still the prize — you're just building for internal testers until general availability actually lands. If you want to ship something a stranger can install this year, Snap is the only one of the four where that's already true.

None of these timelines are final — Meta's general-availability date in particular is the one to watch, since it's the platform with the biggest existing audience waiting on the other side of it.
