AR/VR/XR Device Landscape: 2026 Overview

ARVRXRspatial computingApple Vision ProMeta QuestSamsung Galaxy XRhardware

Overview

The extended reality hardware market in mid-2026 has shifted significantly from a year ago. Samsung's Galaxy XR has broken Apple's monopoly on premium spatial computing, the PlayStation VR2 found new life with a dramatic price cut and PC adapter, and the smart glasses category is consolidating around Ray-Ban Meta — with Google's Android XR platform set to challenge it. Consumer VR remains stable, anchored by Meta's Quest line while the Quest 4 has been pushed out to 2027 or later.

Devices confirmed shipping as of June 2026. "Upcoming" section covers announced products not yet at retail.

Consumer VR Headsets

Meta Quest 3

Released: October 2023 | Price: $499

Still the go-to standalone headset for most buyers. Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, pancake lenses, 2064×2208 per eye at 90/120 Hz, and full-color passthrough MR. Connects to PC via USB-C or Air Link. Nearly three years in, the software ecosystem is the deepest of any standalone headset.

  • Use cases: Gaming, fitness, productivity, casual MR

  • Notable: Mature platform with thousands of titles; still no successor until at least 2027

Meta Quest 3S

Released: October 2024 | Price: $299

Same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip as the Quest 3, but Fresnel lenses and 1832×1920 per eye keep costs down. Color passthrough included but lower fidelity. The most affordable entry point for standalone VR with MR passthrough.

  • Use cases: Entry-level VR, education, casual MR

  • Notable: Best price for any color-passthrough standalone headset

PlayStation VR2

Released: February 2023 | Price: $399 (reduced from $549) + PC VR adapter available

Sony's price cut and the launch of the PC VR adapter transformed the PSVR2's position. OLED HDR displays (2000×2040 per eye, 90/120 Hz), eye tracking for foveated rendering, and adaptive trigger Sense controllers now work with SteamVR — making this one of the most compelling OLED VR options at its new price.

  • Use cases: PS5 gaming, PC VR via adapter

  • Notable: Eye tracking + OLED at $399 is the best value in tethered VR in 2026

Bigscreen Beyond 2

Released: Early 2026 | Price: $1,019

The lightest full-featured PC VR headset ever built at 107 grams. Dual 2560×2560 micro-OLED panels, 116° horizontal FOV, integrated eye tracking, and 90 Hz. Requires SteamVR base stations and a powerful PC — but for enthusiasts willing to build around it, nothing matches the combination of weight, resolution, and display quality.

  • Use cases: Enthusiast PC VR gaming, simulation, extended-wear sessions

  • Notable: Micro-OLED at this size and weight is a genuine engineering milestone; eye tracking included at launch

Spatial Computing / Mixed Reality

Apple Vision Pro (M5)

Released: 2025 (M5 refresh) | Price: $3,499

Apple refreshed visionOS with the M5 chip while keeping the same micro-OLED display stack — approximately 3660×3200 per eye at 120 Hz with a 100° FOV. The R1 co-processor continues to manage sensor fusion below 12ms. Input remains gaze + pinch + voice with no controllers. visionOS application catalog has grown substantially, with enterprise adoption accelerating in healthcare and CAD workflows. No new hardware revision is expected in the near term; Apple's spatial computing R&D has shifted toward the upcoming smart glasses platform.

  • Use cases: Spatial productivity, 3D/360 media, enterprise (surgery, CAD, field support)

  • Notable: Still the highest-resolution XR display available; visionOS app ecosystem is maturing

Samsung Galaxy XR

Released: October 2025 | Price: $1,799

The most consequential new entrant since the Vision Pro. Samsung built its first XR headset with Google (Android XR) and Qualcomm (Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2). Dual 3,552×3,840 micro-OLED displays — effectively 4.3K per eye — with full-color passthrough, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Runs Android XR, giving it access to the full Android app catalog, Google Play, and Google's AI stack. Battery life is ~2 hours via a tethered pack, same trade-off as Vision Pro. Controllers available separately at $250.

  • Use cases: Spatial productivity, media consumption, Android app access, Google Workspace

  • Notable: Half the price of Vision Pro with comparable display specs; Android XR means any Android app runs in a spatial window

Enterprise AR

Microsoft HoloLens 2

Released: 2019 | Price: ~$3,500

HoloLens 2 remains the incumbent enterprise AR platform with optical see-through holographic waveguide displays (52° diagonal FOV), Azure Kinect depth sensing, and hands-free hand/eye tracking. Microsoft has not announced a HoloLens 3; enterprise XR investment has shifted toward Azure-connected software and partner hardware integrations. Still widely deployed in manufacturing, healthcare, and defense.

  • Use cases: Remote assist, assembly guidance, medical procedure overlay, field service

  • Notable: Widest enterprise ISV ecosystem; hardware refresh unlikely in the near term

Magic Leap 2

Released: September 2022 | Price: from $3,299

The wider 70° diagonal FOV and adjustable liquid crystal dimmer (for bright ambient environments) remain differentiators over HoloLens 2. Compute runs in a tethered puck. Positioned for surgical AR, defense, and industrial quality control where optical clarity in bright light matters.

  • Use cases: Surgical AR, defense, manufacturing QC

  • Notable: Dimmer control is a meaningful advantage outdoors or in bright factory environments

Consumer AR Glasses & Smart Glasses

Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2)

Released: 2024 | Price: $379

The dominant smart glasses platform with over 9 million units sold and an estimated 90%+ market share in the category. The second generation added a 12MP ultrawide camera, improved battery, and deeper Meta AI integration for hands-free voice queries, translation, and contextual awareness. No AR display — the value proposition is AI-in-your-ear with socially acceptable form factor.

  • Use cases: Hands-free capture, Meta AI voice assistant, music, navigation

  • Notable: By far the most widely adopted XR wearable; sets the baseline competitors must beat

XREAL One / One Pro

Released: 2024–2025 | Price: $499–$599

XREAL's latest display glasses cross the threshold from "portable screen" to genuine AR with a 3-DoF tracking system and micro-OLED displays that can anchor virtual content to real-world space. The One Pro adds wider FOV. Tethers to a phone or PC via USB-C; XREAL also makes a standalone Android compute puck (Beam Pro).

  • Use cases: Portable large-screen display, light AR, productivity on the go

  • Notable: XREAL is the AR hardware partner for Google's Project Aura (Android XR glasses)

Snap Spectacles (5th gen)

Released: 2024 (developer preview) | Price: ~$99/month subscription

Waveguide AR display with Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1, tethered to a phone. Still a developer platform for Lens experience creators. Not a consumer retail product.

  • Use cases: AR Lens development, social AR

  • Notable: First waveguide AR glasses open to third-party developers at scale
